The Children of Lir

“The Children of Lir” is probably the best-known story in this book. Almost every school child in Ireland is familiar with it. Over the years, the tale has inspired countless artists. A famous sculpture called “The Children of Lir” by Oisín Kelly can be seen in the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin.

Lir, a wealthy chieftain, was married to the king’s daughter, Eve, who he loved with all his heart. They had four beautiful children: Fionnuala – the eldest; her brother – Aodh, whose hair was as red as fire; and the twin boys, Conn and Fiachra. They all lived happily in Lir’s hilltop fort.
